Travelling to El Chaltén

By plane

The nearest airport is Aeropuerto Internacional El Calafate (El Calafate International Airport) and from there you continue by bus to El Chaltén (215 Km. / 4 hours). From Buenos Aires there are daily flights to El Calafate (3 hs. direct flights).

By bus

Because of the remote location, the only choice to get to El Chaltén is by bus (view buses Timetable), directly from El Calafate (distance: 215 Km.) south of Santa Cruz Province or from Perito Moreno (distance: 220 Km.) north of Santa Cruz Province. From and to El Calafate run daily buses from October till May. Transport services from and to Perito Moreno are not regular.

By car

There are two principal ways to access El Chaltén area: the National Route (NR) Nº 3 along the Atlantic coast is the busiest (paved) and the NR N° 40 parallel to the Cordillera de los Andes (mostly unpaved).

From Buenos Aires by NR Nº 3:
By the NR N°3 (passing through Bahía Blanca, Puerto Madryn, Trelew, Comodoro Rivadavia and Caleta Olivia cities, among others) to Cte. Luis Piedra Buena city, in Santa Cruz Province.
Then take the deviation to the Provincial Route (PR) Nº 288 (passing through Tres Lagos town) to the NR Nº 40 and finally the PR Nº 23 to El Chaltén. In total there is 2755 Km.

Another option from Buenos Aires:
Repeat the first section described above and continue the NR Nº3 towards South until joining the PR Nº 5 West direction (if you continue the NR Nº3 you will arrive at Río Gallegos city on the East).
Continue the PR Nº5, then the NR Nº 40 towards North in its connection with the PR N°11 (this route goes to El Calafate and Perito Moreno Glacier) and finally the PR Nº 23 towards West to El Chaltén. In total there is 3050 Km.
