Along with B&Bs and guesthouses, a hostel is the most affordable way to stay in El Chaltén, and the one with the best atmosphere to share your trip with other travelers. It's ideal if you travel solo, on a tight budget, or want to meet people: the shared kitchen and living room are where conversations start, trail tips get swapped and even hiking partners are found. The trade-off is less privacy and a bit more noise than at a hotel or cabin.
Most combine shared rooms (dorms) for 4, 6 or 8 people, with single beds or bunk beds, and private double, triple or quadruple rooms. Almost all have a fully equipped shared kitchen so you can cook your meals and pack lunches for your excursions, a living or dining room, heating, WiFi and bed linen. Many also offer lockers, laundry and luggage storage, which is very handy if you are coming back from camping in the National Park or your bus leaves late.
As a rough guide, a bed in a shared room costs between USD 20 and 50 per person, depending on the hostel and the date, and private rooms cost more. Check the rate directly with each hostel.
Few hostels accept pets, so check with each one before booking. Also keep in mind you won't be able to bring them onto the trails of Los Glaciares National Park, where pets and domestic animals are strictly prohibited for environmental safety reasons (APN Resolution No. 59/2013).
In high season (December through February, especially January) it's best to book at least 3 months ahead, since availability fills up fast. In shoulder season (October-November and March-April), 1 to 3 months is usually enough. Some hostels close in winter, but others stay open.
